Today, she embodies the departed in the collective imagination, representing a humorous and colourful version of Mexico’s cultural identity.

The Day of the Dead altar

The Day of the Dead ofrenda is a ritual to welcome souls and honour loved ones. Photographs, favourite dishes and drinks are combined with candles, water, salt and incense to create a space of memory and celebration. Traditionally, the altar is built to show three levels: heaven, earth and the underworld.

Papel picado: the element of air

The cempasúchil flower is the quintessential emblem of the Day of the Dead. It symbolises life and the sun. Its vibrant colour and intense aroma guide souls on their journey back to the world of the living. The flower adorns ofrendas and creates pathways, serving as a symbol that connects life and death.
