Styling and Shopping Tips from Daniella Gurtner
Autumn is the season of coats, jackets and accessories – and the perfect opportunity to rethink your wardrobe. We spoke with Daniella Gurtner, Fashion Director at myself magazine, and she shared her top seven tips for the season.
The Coat as a Key Piece
A high-quality coat is the key piece of any winter wardrobe. Classics like belted coats or double-breasted styles remain essential. When buying, go for a slightly looser fit – thick sweaters and layering need room. In terms of length, mid-calf is trending, and taller women can opt for ankle-length styles.
Rethinking Layering
Layering is no longer just underneath – it’s happening on top. Instead of classic knit scarves, large fabric wraps, ponchos and throws are in focus. Sweaters can also be creatively tied around the neck as scarf alternatives. Especially modern: tone-on-tone combinations of coat and accessories for a monochrome look.
Scarves & Headwear
Scarves are especially important this fall – in all shapes and materials. They replace the classic knitted scarf and offer countless styling options: worn as a triangle around the hips, as a retro headscarf or traditionally around the neck. From woven wool to silk, from small carrés to oversized scarves worn loosely as triangles.
Shoe Trend: Boots
Loafers remain a classic, but the shoe of the season is the boot – in all variations: knee-high or ankle boots, with wide or narrow shafts. Especially exciting: pairing them with skirts or dresses that fall just over the knee. The hem ends at the boot shaft, no skin is visible – a modern and cohesive look.
Skirt & Dress Lengths
The mini is making a comeback on the runways. But just as relevant – and perhaps more wearable for many – is the “Italian length” just above the knee. Mid-calf and ankle lengths also remain key this fall.
The New Trousers
We’ve grown tired of skinny jeans, and extreme wide-leg styles are often impractical. The solution lies in between: my new favorite is the classic straight-leg trouser. Timeless, modern and easy to style – especially with shoes that have a chunky sole.
Sportswear as Inspiration
Sporty elements are a must – but with a sense of style. A nylon windbreaker or a clean zip-up paired with classic pleated trousers creates the perfect contrast. Fewer prints, more solid colors: that’s how the modern sports look works.
Conclusion
Fall/Winter 2025 is all about strong coats, new accessories and a deliberate mix of classic and sporty elements. Investing now in a good coat, a pair of boots and some creative scarves means you’ll be perfectly styled for any occasion.
